L'invention concerne un procédé (100) pour faire fonctionner un frein de service (210) par rapport à un essieu (205) afin de freiner une roue (215) d'un essieu (205) d'un véhicule (200a), en particulier d'un véhicule utilitaire (200b), comprenant un autre essieu (205') qui diffère de l'essieu (205). Le procédé (100) comprend les étapes consistant à : détecter (110) une variable d'entrée (260) associée à l'autre essieu (205') ; déterminer (120) une variable de commande (270) associée à l'essieu à l'aide de la variable d'entrée (260) associée à l'autre essieu (205') ; et délivrer (130) un signal de commande (280) afin de modifier une variable de freinage (211) du frein de service (210) tout en tenant compte de la variable de commande (270) associée à l'essieu.
