Abstract
Nacreous pigments (I) are based on mica flakes coated with metal oxides, esp. TiO2. The novelty is that (I) have a top coat of SnO2 and/or CeO2 to increase the stability in glazes and enamels. - Pref. the top coat comprises ca. 5-30 wt..% of the total (I). Prodn. involves treating an aq. suspension of (un)calcined mica flakes coated with metal oxide(s) (esp. rutile TiO2) at least once, with a soln. of a Sn and/or Ce salt, keeping the pH constant (pref. at 1-7) by simultaneous addn. of a base, so that the salt is hydrolysed. The (I) coated with SnO2 and/or CeOs is sepd., washed and dried if necessary and then calcined.
