Abstract
A non-conductive slotted core (1) of homogeneous material made from glass-fibre reinforced plastics has a rectangular slot (2) with convexly radiused edges (2A,2B) and contg. an optical fibre ribbon (3) lying at the bottom of the slot. The core acts as a cable strength member and armour. The slot is closed by a cap (5) of extruded plastics material and having concavely radiused edges (5A,5B) which exactly fit onto the edges (2A,2B). - A binder, helically wound around the core and cap, serves to locate the cap in place on top of the slot prior to extrusion of the outer sheath (7) and during the induction of an excess length of fibre when leaving a mfg. capstan.
