Abstract

In the corrosion protection of ferrous metal or cement-based internal walls of water pipes, continuously sampled water is treated with solid lime prior to passing to a saturator and then reintroduced into the pipe. The amt. of added lime is such that on a total CO2 concn. versus Ca(2+) concn. diagram, the point of the water is within a zone between the CaO/CO2 equilibrium curve and the spontaneous CaCO3 pptn. curve and above the line (SX) of slope equal to 2, S lying on the abscissa axis and its abscissa being a function of the concn. of SO4(2-), Cl(-), NO3(-), Mg(2+), Na(+) and K(+) ions. - Before introduction into the saturator, the sampled water is mixed in a decarbonater with a lime-loaded CO2 free soln. from the saturator, the flow rate of this soln. being high enough to allow almost complete CO2 elimination in the decarbonater by CaCO3 pptn.
