Abstract

A process for the synthesis of mono and bis (3-R3-4-R4-5- R5-pyrazol-1-yl)-1,4-dihydroxybenzenes having structures I, II and III in which the radical (3-R3-4-R4-5-R5- pyrazol-1-yl) may be: 1-pyrazole, 3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1- yl, 4-nitropyrazol-1-yl, 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitropyrazol-1-yl- 4-chloropyrazol-1-yl, 3,5-dimethyl-4-chloropyrazol-1-yl and 3,5-dimethyl-4-bromopyrazol-1-yl. The corresponding pyrazole derivative with suitable R3, R4 and R5 substituents is caused to react with p-benzoquinone, yielding 1,4-dihydroxy-2-(3-R3-4-R4-5-R5-pyrazol-1- yl)benzene (I), 1,4-dihydroxy-2,3-bis(3-R3-4-R4-5-R5- pyrazol-1-yl) benzene II and 1,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(3-R3-4- R4-5-R5-pyrazol-1-yl) benzene III derivatives, which are desirable because of their strong photoprotective effect in relation to ultraviolet light. This photoprotective effect against natural and/or artificial ultraviolet light renders them suitable for application as effective photostabiliser additives in natural and synthetic polymers, plastics, fibres and elastomers, and as photoprotective sun filters for cosmetics, drugs and suntan creams.
