Abstract
Improvements to patent of invention number 8702020 for a new process for the preparation of famotidine polymorphs. A high melting point or high apparent density polymorph or mixtures thereof is caused to react with an inorganic acid, preferably hydrochloric acid, in an alcohol, preferably methanol, and then an organic base, preferably DBU, is added and a variety of famotidine with a low melting point and a relatively low apparent density is added to the resulting solution dissolved in a chlorinated solvent and heated, which encourages formation of the low melting point low apparent density polymorph which is distinguished from the others by its physical and chemical properties and bioactive behaviour.
