SE CONSIGUE ELIMINACION EFICAZ DE DIOXIDO DE AZUFRE DE UNA CORRIENTE DE GAS DE COMBUSTION EN UN LAVADOR UTILIZANDO UNA CORRIENTE ACUOSA RECIRCULANTE QUE CONTIENE HIDROXIDO DE MAGNESIO Y SULFITO MAGNESICO, QUE ACTUAN JUNTOS COMO ABSORBENTES DE DIOXIDO DE AZUFRE. EL SULFITO DE MAGNESIO PROCEDE DE HIDROXIDO DE MAGNESIO, QUE ES EL PRODUCTO DE UNA REACCION ENTRE MAGNESIO SOLUBLE DEL AGUA DEL MAR E HIDROXIDO CALCICO AÑADIDO AL SISTEMA DE LAVADO. EL SULFITO Y BISULFITO DE MAGNESIO SE OXIDAN A SULFATO MAGNESICO INTRODUCIENDO AIRE. EL SULFATO DE MAGNESIO SE RECONVIERTE A HIDROXIDO MAGNESICO POR REACCION CON HIDROXIDO CALCICO ADICIONAL, CON YESO COMO SUBPRODUCTO.
