EL SULFITO DE MAGNESIO PROCEDE DE HIDROXIDO DE MAGNESIO, QUE ES EL PRODUCTO DE UNA REACCION ENTRE MAGNESIO SOLUBLE DEL AGUA DEL MAR E HIDROXIDO CALCICO AÑADIDO AL SISTEMA DE LAVADO. EL SULFITO Y BISULFITO DE MAGNESIO SE OXIDAN A SULFATO MAGNESICO INTRODUCIENDO AIRE.
