An apparatus for pumping liquid oxygen comprising in combination with a fractionating column to separate a low boiling gas mixture: a pump adapted to handle liquids and a channel connecting the suction of said pump to a relatively hot vapor space in said column; a condenser intercalated in said channel and a heat exchanger interposed in said channel between said condenser and said pump; means for conducting a relatively cold stream of the mixture through said condenser to said column in heat exchange relationship with a vapor stream passing through said condenser; means for conducting a relatively cool fluid from said column through said exchanger in heat exchange relationship with a liquid stream passing from said condenser to said pump; means for putting said relatively cool fluid back into heat exchange relationship with the liquid transmitting end of said pump; means for placing the liquid stream discharged by said pump in heat exchange relation with the hot mixture fed to said vaporized column thus said stream; and means for conducting said vaporized stream to a pressure vessel.
