Abstract

In a process and device for shortening the needle thread end at the start of sewing in double-lockstitch sewing machines, the catch-thread device (23) of a thread cutting device (22 60 90) existing on every machine is moved into its thread catching position during the first stitch-forming cycle, whereby, either the catch-thread device (23) movement at a suitable time or a stream of compressed air from a compressed air line (81) ensures that at least the leg of the needle thread loop on the spool side is engaged by the catch-thread device (23). When the catch-thread device (23) moves back into its initial position a part of the needle thread end is cut off. In addition, the needle thread is either clamped beneath a leaf spring (44) or pushed under the sewing foot through an adequately great feed distance and thus held by friction.
