Abstract

The invention relates to a mail processing system in which the message content of mail items (1) can already be converted into an electronic message (e) in a mail routing centre (11) at an early stage in the mail flow. Said conversion takes place under the control of a control word which is provided on the mail item and which is read out in the mail routing centre. Conversion and transmission parameters are derived from the parameter codes which are provided on the mail item and which form part of the control word, or from the message part of the mail item. The message converted under the control of the conversion parameters is transmitted by electronic means to the addressee(s) (19, 20) under the control of the transmision parameters, while the mail item itself is transmitted, after conversion, via the normal mail flow (f).
