Abstract

A method of regulating a continuous process (P) includes a stage of optimizing a model (M) representative of the behaviour of said process (P), in which: a control magnitude (u) is applied both to the process (P) and to the model (M), each of which responds thereto by providing a signal the two resulting signals are applied to a subtractor (13) to obtain an error signal ( sigma ) and the model (M) is corrected as a function of the error signal ( sigma ) and a subsequent regulation stage in which a control magnitude (u) is permanently applied to the process (P) and to the model (M). Correction is performed by generating discrete cross-correlation functions between the error signal ( sigma ) and the control magnitude (u) for different time offsets ( tau ) between the control magnitude (u) and the error signal ( sigma ), and in modifying the model (M) so as to minimise the sum of the squares of the cross-correlation functions over a time that the process is observed.
