EL INTERCAMBIO DE DATOS ENTRE LAS ESTACIONES DE TIERRA Y LOS TRANSPONDEDORES, GENERALMENTE EN AVIONES, SOLO PUEDE TENER LUGAR CUANDO EL AVION ES REGISTRADO POR EL ASPA DE LA ANTENA. A PARTIR DEL TIEMPO DE DURACION DE LA SEÑAL SE DETERMINA LA DISTANCIA DEL AVION RESPECTO A LA ESTACION DE TIERRA. LA DETERMINACION EXACTA DE LA POSICION TIENE LUGAR CON AYUDA DE LA POSICION DE LA ANTENA. EL SISTEMA DE RADAR SECUNDARIO, DE ACUERDO CON LA INVENCION, UTILIZA UNA ANTENA CON COBERTURA OMNIDIRECCIONAL. POR TANTO, ES POSIBLE EN TODO MOMENTO UN INTERCAMBIO DE DATOS ENTRE LA ESTACION DE TIERRA Y EL AVION.
