THE CONTROL SURFACES ARE ADAPTED TO USE THE WIND ENERGY IN RESPONSE TO THE MOVEMENT OF THE BRIDGE BEAM TO REDUCE SUCH MOVEMENT. THE CONTROL SURFACES ARE DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS IN THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION OF THE BRIDGE AND THERE IS A PLURALITY OF DETECTORS (19, 26) TO MEASURE THE MOVEMENTS OF THE BRIDGE BEAM. THERE IS A LOCAL CONTROL UNIT (20, 25) ASSOCIATED WITH EACH SECTION OF CONTROL SURFACES, ADAPTED TO CONTROL THE SECTION OF CONTROL SURFACES IN RESPONSE TO INFORMATION FROM ONE OR MORE OF THE ABOVE DETECTORS. IN A METHOD OF THE INVENTION, THE CONTROL SURFACES (14, 15, 16, 17, 34, 35, 36) ARE DIVIDED INTO SECTIONS IN THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION OF THE BRIDGE AND A PLURALITY OF DETECTORS (19, 26) MEASURE THE MOVEMENTS OF THE BRIDGE BEAM, AFTER WHICH A LOCAL CONTROL UNIT (20, 25) ASSOCIATED WITH EACH SECTION OF CONTROL SURFACES CONTROLS THE SECTION OF CONTROL SURFACES IN QUESTION IN RESPONSE TO INFORMATION FROM ONE OR MORE OF THE DETECTORS ABOVE.
