PARA EVITAR UN DAÑO SECUNDARIO INCONTROLABLE A UNA BARRA DE COMBUSTIBLE, EN PARTICULAR A UNA BARRA DE COMBUSTIBLE ELABORADA DE ZIRCALOY CON UN FORRO SOBRE SU LADO INTERIOR, QUE PUEDE SER ORIGINADO MEDIANTE LA ENTRADA DE UN REFRIGERANTE DENTRO DE LA BARRA DE COMBUSTIBLE EN EL CASO DE UN DAÑO PRIMARIO, SE INTRODUCE DE MANERA DELIBERADA UN GERMEN (9) DENTRO DEL TUBO (1) DE REVESTIMIENTO. EN TANTO EN CUANTO SEA LA LONGITUD DE LA BARRA DE COMBUSTIBLE NO DAÑADA, EL GERMEN PERMANECE PASIVO Y NO INTERFIERE LA OPERACION DE LA BARRA DE COMBUSTIBLE, PERO ES ACTIVADO MEDIANTE LA ENTRADA DE REFRIGERANTE A LA BARRA DE COMBUSTIBLE EN EL CASO DE UN DAÑO PRIMARIO, O BIEN MEDIANTE HIDROGENO U OTRO PRODUCTO DE REACCION GENERADO MEDIANTE LA REACCION DEL REFRIGERANTE DENTRO DE LA BARRA DE COMBUSTIBLE, ORIGINANDO UNA PERFORACION DE SUPERFICIE PEQUEÑA. LA ACUMULACION DE UNA ATMOSFERA AGRESIVA EN EL TUBO DE REVESTIMIENTO DESPUES DE DAÑO PRIMARIO SE PREVIENE DE ESTA FORMA DE TAL MODO, QUE PUEDE ORIGINAR ADEMAS DAÑOS NO DESEADOS, INCLUSO DAÑOS SECUNDARIOS EN ZONAS GRANDES.
