EL DISPOSITIVO IMPONE UNA ONDA DE EXCITACION SINUSOIDAL, DE FRECUENCIA Y AMPLITUD CONSTANTES, SOBRE UNA BOBINA A TRAVES DE UNA IMPEDANCIA FIJA DE UNA RED DE AISLAMIENTO DE EXCITACION. LA AMPLITUD Y FASE DEL VOLTAJE EN LA BOBINA FLUCTUA SEGUN LA INDUCTANCIA DE LA MISMA. ESTA VARIACION DE INDUCTANCIA DEPENDE DEL CAMBIO EN LA DENSIDAD DE FLUJO MAGNETICO CREADO POR LA CORRIENTE DE LA BOBINA Y EL DESPLAZAMIENTO DEL ENTREHIERRO ENTRE EL POLO DE LA BOBINA Y LA ARMADURA.
