Abstract

The discarding sabot of a sub-calibre projectile, fired through smooth bore barrels, has a number of ring segments (6) round the body with an outer driving band (11) of plastics and pref. polyamide. The nominal breaking point (14) is a longitudinal groove slit along the projectile axis. The groove (14) length (16) and its structure towards the striking end of the projectile are set to prevent cracking in the driving band (11) zone on opening the sabot.
