Improvement in a pellet softening process as cast from substantially pure iron comprising heating the shot above 910ºC but substantially below the melting point thereof for a period of at least 30 seconds and maintaining a nitrogen atmosphere not oxidizer around said pellet while it is being raised to said temperature maintained therein and cooled from said temperature to one exceeding 700º c.
