EL TRATAMIENTO, A TRAVES DE UN PROCESO DE ABSORCION SECA, DE UN GAS PROVENIENTE DE UN PROCESO ELECTROLITICO CALIENTE PARA LA PRODUCCION DE ALUMINIO COMPRENDE AL MENOS DOS ETAPAS (3, 4). EL OXIDO DE ALUMINIO EN PARTICULAS (EL ABSORBENTE) PASA A TRAVES DE LAS ETAPAS (3, 4) DEL PROCESO DE ABSORCION A CONTRACORRIENTE CON RESPECTO AL GAS. DE ESTA FORMA EL GAS SE TRATA CON UN ABSORBENTE PARCIALMENTE GASTADO EN UNA PRIMERA ETAPA DE ABSORCION SECA DESPUES DE LO CUAL EL ABSORBENTE EN PARTICULAS ES SEPARADO DEL GAS CORRIENTE ABAJO DE LA PRIMERA ETAPA DE ABSORCION. PARTE DEL ABSORBENTE EN PARTICULAS SEPARADO ES SACADO (33) DEL PROCESO DE ABSORCION CON VISTAS A RECICLAR LAS SUBSTANCIAS QUE CONTIENEN FLUOR ABSORBIDO PARA EL PROCESO ELECTROLITICO. EL RESTO DEL ABSORBENTE SEPARADO ES RECIRCULADO EN LA PRIMERA ETAPA DE ABSORCION PARA OPTIMIZAR LA ABSORCION DE LAS SUBSTANCIAS QUE CONTIENEN FLUOR Y LA DESABSORCION DEL DIOXIDO DE AZUFRE EN ESTA ETAPA. SIMULTANEAMENTE, EL GAS ES TRANSFERIDO A UNA SEGUNDA ETAPADE ABSORCION SECA. EN ESTA SEGUNDA ETAPA, EL GAS SE TRATA CON OXIDO DE ALUMINIO EN PARTICULAS, REACTIVO, ESENCIALMENTE NO GASTADO, DE MANERA QUE EL FLUORURO GASEOSO QUE PERMANECE EN EL GAS SEA ABSORBIDO MUY EFICIENTEMENTE, MIENTRAS QUE AL MISMO TIEMPO UNA PARTE DEL GAS TAMBIEN ES ABSORBIDO. FINALMENTE, ESTE OXIDO DE ALUMINIO EN PARTICULAS SE SEPARA DEL GAS CORRIENTE ABAJO DE LA SEGUNDA ETAPA DE ABSORCION SECA, ANTES DE QUE EL GAS SEA DESCARGADO A LA ATMOSFERA CIRCUNDANTE.
