Abstract

The packaging system has a rigid tray (12) with a gas-flushed compartment (22) for receiving the food product (14). The food is enclosed in a second package comprising a shrinkable thinly formed flexible material with transverse end seals and a longitudinal fin seal extending between the end seals. The package is opened by using a tear initiator at the fin seal. A hermetically sealed cover (24) extends over the top of the side walls to define a chamber containing food and a headspace surrounding the food. An independent claim is included for a method of packaging the cooked food product.
