EL GROSOR DEL SUSTRATO ESTA DENTRO DE LA ESPECIFICACION DE LOS DISCOS COMPACTOS, POR EJEMPLO, 1,2 MM. SE FORMA AL MENOS UNA CAPA DE ALTA DENSIDAD (3) MEDIANTE UN MATERIAL QUE ES TRANSPARENTE O CASI TRANSPARENTE PARA LA LONGITUD DE ONDA DEL LASER DE LOS REPRODUCTORES ESTANDAR DE DISCO COMPACTO ({LA} = 780 NM), PERO ES, AL MENOS PARCIALMENTE, REFLECTANTE PARA LAS LONGITUDES DE ONDA MAS CORTAS UTILIZADAS PARA LOS DISCOS DE ALTA DENSIDAD ({LA} = 635 NM). PARA CONSEGUIR UNA ALTA DENSIDAD, SE UTILIZAN PASOS DE PISTA MAS PEQUEÑOS Y HOYOS MAS PEQUEÑOS EN LA CAPA O CAPAS DE ALTA DENSIDAD. PARA CONSEGUIR UNA MEJOR LECTURA DE LAS SEÑALES EN AMBAS CAPAS, LA DE ALTA DENSIDAD ESTA SITUADA MAS CERCA DEL LADO DE ENTRADA DEL HAZ DE RAYOS LASER EN EL SUSTRATO. ESTO PERMITE UNA MAYOR APERTURA NUMERICA DE LA LENTE DE ENFOQUE Y POR TANTO UN PUNTO MAS PEQUEÑO PARA LA LONGITUD DE ONDA MAS CORTA. LA CAPA DE ALTA DENSIDAD SE SITUA PREFERIBLEMENTE EN EL CENTRO DEL SUSTRATO, POR EJEMPLO A 0,6 MM, DEBIDO A QUE EN ESAS CONDICIONES, LA CONFIGURACION DE LA CAPA DE ALTA DENSIDAD ES COMPATIBLE CON LOS DISCOS DE DOBLE CARA DE ALTA DENSIDAD QUE TIENEN UN GROSOR TOTAL DE 1,2 MM. EL CONTENIDO DE INFORMACION DE LA CAPA ESTANDAR SE PUEDE DUPLICAR EN LA CAPA DE ALTA DENSIDAD O SE PUEDE REPRESENTAR MEDIANTE UN ESQUEMA DE CODIFICACION DISTINTO.
