Abstract
Soap and detergent compositions contain as whitening agent a pyrazoline derivative of formula <FORM:0883826/III/1> in which R is a C1-4 alkyl group (including monohydroxyalkyl) or a phenyl group, and Ar is a phenyl group substituted by one chlorine or bromine atom in the para position by two such atoms of which one is in the para position. The compositions may contain 0,001-1% by weight of the whitening agent which may be added to a detergent slurry as a solution in ethanol or other solvent, and the slurry spray-dried. According to the Provisional Specification, the phenyl radical Ar may be substituted by 1-3 halogen atoms in any positions, and the -COOR group may be attached to any position of the N-phenyl radical. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 832,239.ALSO:The invention comprises pyrazoline derivatives of formula <FORM:0883826/IV (b)/1> in which R is a C1-4 alkyl group (including monohydroxyalkyl) or a phenyl group and Ar is a phenyl group substituted by one chlorine or bromine atom in the para position, or by two such atoms of which one is in the para position. These compounds may be prepared by condensing a ketone of formula Ar.CO.CH2.CH2.NR1R2, where R1 and R2 are lower alkyl, with a hydrazinobenzoic acid, followed by esterification. They are used as whitening agents in detergent compositions. According to the Provisional Specification, the phenyl radical Ar may be substituted by 1-3 halogen atoms in any positions, and the -COOR group may be attached to any position of the N-phenyl radical. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 832,239.ALSO:Textiles, e.g. nylon, silk and acetate rayon, are treated with compositions containing as whitening agent a pyrazoline derivative of formula <FORM:0883826/IV (c)/1> in which R is a C1-4 alkyl group (including monohydroxyalkyl) or a phenyl group, and Ar is a phenyl group substituted by one chlorine or bromine atom in the para-position or by two such atoms of which one is in the para-position. The compounds may be applied to textiles from a dispersion in a suitable liquid such as water, e.g. from aqueous detergent solutions containing a soap or a synthetic organic detergent. The liquid may contain other textile-treating agents. According to the Provisional Specification, the phenyl radical Ar may be substituted by 1-3 halogen atoms in any positions, and the -COOR group may be attached to any position of the N-phenyl radical. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 832,239.
