Abstract

Homopolymers and/or copolymers of alpha-olefins are chlorinated and/or chlorosulphonated by reacting them in a dry powdered or granular form with gaseous chlorine, or a mixture of chlorine and sulphur dioxide, at a temperature of from 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. preferably in the presence of light. The expression alpha-olefin mean a compound of the general formula R-CH=CH2 where R represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, or aryl group. The copolymers may be obtained by the method described in Specification 898,261. The reaction may be effected continuously in a fluid bed system in which the polymer is moved countercurrent to the chlorine, or chlorine and sulphur dioxide. The chlorinated and/or chlorosulphonated polymers may be vulcanized. Polymers mentioned are polypropylene, polybutene and copolymers of ethylene and propylene. The vulcanization may be effected in the presence of carbon black using conventional vulcanizing agents.
