Abstract

A dry granular distemper is made by adding a pigment powder to an aqueous solution of a cellulose ether or ester and spray drying the resultant slurry. The cellulose derivative may be methyl cellulose, hydroxy-ethyl methyl cellulose or a mixture thereof. In Examples, (1) 2 cwt. of chalk and 1/4 cwt. of titanium dioxide are added to a solution of 5 lbs. of low viscosity methyl cellulose in 250 lbs. water and the mixture is spray dried (2) 8 parts by weight of linseed oil and 1 1/2 parts by weight of a phenol ethylene oxide condensate are added to 100 parts of the product of Example 1. Chinawood oil, resinous oils, or solutions of paraffin wax, montan wax, carnauba wax alkyd resins, methacrylate resins and styrenated oils may be added. The compositions may also contain asbestos floats, wood flour, asbestine or Kieselguhr.
