Abstract
<PICT:0945301/C1/1> In the production of glass in a continuous melting furnace divided into melting and refining compartments by a dam, the latter is cooled to improve its durability, and the consequent tendency to creat descending glass currents is nullified by producing an ascending glass flow on the upstream side strong enough to maintain a flow of glass over the dam and to prevent incompletely fused glass passing thereover. As shown, the dam 3 made of electrically fused refractory of good heat-conductivity extends through the hearth 4 and is cooled by gaseous jets 6. Further jets 5 induce the ascending glass flow, which may also be produced by electrodes or mechanical devices such as screws or propellers. Other jets 9 induce an ascending flow downstream of the dam. Modifications, Figs. 1 and 4 (not shown), rel yon the nature of the dam material to produce therein a cooling effect, or, as in Fig. 3 (not shown), the jets 6 play into recesses in the dam. The latter may be disposed between a refining compartment and a conditioning compartment.
