Abstract
Compounds containing the group <FORM:0879625/IV (a)/1> wherein at most one of the free linkages is satisfied by a hydrogen atom, are polymerized with the aid, as a catalyst, of di-3, 5, 5-trimethyl-hexanoyl peroxide. Monomers specified are vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate and methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl phthalimide, styrene, butadiene and diallyl esters. Polymerization may be carried out by a bulk, solution, granular or emulsion process. An Example (4) describes the polymerization of vinyl chloride in an aqueous medium containing gelatin as a suspending agent. Specification 849,028 is referred to.ALSO:Di-3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl peroxide is made by adding 100 vol hydrogen peroxide to 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl chloride followed by the addition of pyridine. The resulting reaction mixture is washed, dried, diluted and evaporated to yield the peroxide. Specification 849,028 is referred to.
