Abstract

Diisocyanates of the formula <FORM:0899987/IV (b)/1> wherein n is a whole number of at most 6 and X is a hydrogen atom or a substituent, such as a halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group, are prepared by heating the corresponding diamines with phosgene. The invention resides in the use of alkali metal bisulphite addition products of the above diisocyanates in dyeing processes (see Group IV(c)). Example 1 employs the adduct of the formula <FORM:0899987/IV (b)/2> Similar adducts are described in Example 6.ALSO:Cellulosic textile materials are dyed or printed with a dyestuff containing at least one acid, water-solubilising group and at least one reactive amino group, the textile being treated, during or after dyeing or printing, with an alkali metal bisulphite addition product of an aryl diisocyanate containing both an aromatically bound and an aliphatically bound isocyanate group, and the so-treated textile being finally heated, or steamed, or allowed to react for a prolonged period at room or a moderately raised temperature in the wet or moist condition. Dyestuffs of the anthraquinone, triphenylmethane, oxazine, nitro, perinone, ph halocyanine and azo (including metallised azo) series may be employed and examples are given. Preferred adducts are those of diisocyanates of the formula <FORM:0899987/IV (c)/1> wherein n is a whole number of at most 6 and X is a hydrogen atom or a substituent such as a halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group. The aliphatic chain may be interrupted by hetero atoms. The dyebath may contain bases or alkaline salts, neutral salts and urea. When the bisulphite adduct is applied subsequently to dyeing, the solution thereof may also contain bases and urea. Printing pastes also contain acid-binding agents, thickeners and urea. Examples are given.
