Abstract
The invention comprises water-insoluble phthalocyanines of the formula <FORM:0947935/C3/1> where Pc is a metal-free or metal-containing phthalocyanine radical which is unsubstituted or contains one halogen substituted in one of the benzo radicals, X1 is the N-radical of a polyalkylene polyamine which contains at least three basic nitrogen atoms and at least one aliphatic group of 8 to 16 carbon atoms or araliphatic group which may contain an aliphatic substituent of 4 to 12 carbon atoms or cycloaliphatic group, X2 is the ammonium cation of such a polyalkylene polyamine and m and n are whole numbers, the sum of which is at least 2 and at most 4, while m is at least 1 and n can be O. The pigments are made by reacting a compound or mixture of compounds of the formula <FORM:0947935/C3/2> where Pc, m and n are as above and Z is hydrogen, an alkali metal or ammonium ion, with m+n mols. of an appropriate polyamine or mixture of polyamines, or by reacting 1 mol. of a compound of the formula <FORM:0947935/C3/3> with m mols. of the polyamine to form the amide of the formula <FORM:0947935/C3/4> saponifying the sulphochloride groups remaining and reacting the product simultaneously or subsequently with n mols. of the polyamine. Examples are given. The pigments are used to prepare ball-point pen inks and in an Example (9) one of the pigments is mixed with octylene glycol and benzyl alcohol to form such an ink.
