Abstract

Free-flowing dispersions of polar synthetic polymer in organic liquid in which the polymer is insoluble are made by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a solvated constituent which would tend to form block or graft copolymer with the monomer in excess of the amount required to stabilize the disperse polymer, the formation of block copolymer being retarded by the presence in the solution of an organic chain transfer agent which can render free radicals in the solvated constituent or in block or graft copolymer incapable of reacting with monomer. The chain transfer agent may be added after the initial stage of the process, which is applied particularly to acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters, amides and nitriles. Chain transfer agents specified are isopropyl, octyl and tert.-dodecyl mercaptans, allyl alcohol, alloocimene and myrcene. Block or graft copolymer-forming constituents specified are degraded rubber and polybutadiene of substantially 1,4-addition. The dispersions are used as coating compositions, for which purpose they may have added thereto titanium dioxide, dibutyl phthalate and a polysiloxane. Specification 941,305 is referred to.ALSO:Glass panels are coated, e.g. by spraying with a dispersion obtained by polymerizing methyl methacrylate in white spirit containing degraded rubber to stabilize the dispersion and an organic chain transfer agent, and then adding thereto dibutyl phthalate, titanium dioxide and a liquid polysiloxane. After application, the coated glass is heated at 127 DEG C. for 1/2 hour. Specification 941,305 is referred to.
