Abstract
A method of metallurgically bonding a predominantly zirconium metal to a predominantly ferrous metal, which comprises arranging in tandem a mass of said predominantly ferrous metal followed by a substantially contiguous butt mass of said predominantly zirconium metal, both within a metal canister. malleable and substantially vacuum-tight ferrous and, while establishing and maintaining the substantial gas evacuation from the interior of said casing and, concomitantly, the axial tandem, said ferrous mass followed by said mass which is predominantly zirconium and which is, contiguously butt therewith, both masses being contained in said can, said arrangement and said extrusion being effected after first degassing said malleable ferrous metal can and all other metals in communication with said zirconium metal during hot extrusion and containing exposed nitrogen to further substantial development in vacuum at the extrusion temperature, fusion being effected together by subsequently aspirating a substantial vacuum.
