Abstract
<PICT:0987098/C4-C5/1> Para- and ortho-xylenes are obtained by passing a xylene mixture to a crystallization zone where para-xylene is recovered, passing the residue to an isomerization zone, the effluent from which is distilled to obtain (a) a light ends fraction, (b) a mixed xylenes fraction which is passed to the crystallization step and (c) bottoms which are separately fractionated to recover ortho-xylene fresh xylene feed may be introduced to the crystallization or the distillation step. Crystallization is effected in cooler 14 at 5 DEG to - 70 DEG C. and para-xylene separated in zone 18. The residue is mixed with hydrogen and isomerized in reactor 24 with platinum-alumina-silica at 425-500 DEG C., 150-200 p.s.i.g. with 5-10 vols. hydrogen per vol. of hydrocarbon vapour. The effluent is condensed and passed to column 38 from which the bottoms are fractionated in column 42 to obtain orthoxylene overhead and the overhead is fractionated in column 50 to separate light ends from the xylene recycle.
