Abstract

Skins are dehaired using a proteolytic enzyme solution, derived from the treatment of keratin-aceous material with a strain of Streptomyces fradiae, having a keratinase activity between 100 and 1100 keratinase units/ml. This process eliminates the usual alkali pretreatment with line. Potassium and sodium chlorides, sodium and magnesium sulphates, sodium hydrogen sulphide, sodium bicarbonate and sodium thioglycolate may be added as activators and phenolic derivatives as preservatives.
