Abstract

A tool holding arrangement for holding a turning tool shaft 3 and a rotary tool shaft 5 comprises a shaft- receiving tool holder 1 and screw- operated clamp pieces 7, 7a. Each has a shaft-engaging face 15, 15a and a frustro-conical surface co-operating with a corresponding surface of the tool holder to exert a gripping action on the shaft. The tool holder can have a through-bore for holding a circular section shaft 3, with coaxial clamp pieces at each bore end, having frustro-conical surfaces with their small ends facing each other and joined by a single screw, gripping the shaft by a part-circular cross section surface on each clamp piece. If the tool holder has a groove or slot for a square-section shaft 5, two clamp pieces are spaced apart along it with their axes parallel.
