Abstract

A shaft seal, suitable for use with rollers 2 of belt conveyors, includes a support member 8 and a sealing element 9 of annular shape and resilient material. This element, when engaged with shaft 5, is deflected axially at annular portion 19 thereof adjacent the shaft. A retainer 10 has an annular portion 23 which engages the non-deflected portion of element 9 to hold it fast with respect to member 8. The retainer is so apertured at 25 that it is a close clearance fit on the shaft and is so shaped that its portion 26 immediately surrounding the shaft is axially spaced from portion 19 of element 9 thereby, with portion 19 and shaft 5, to form an annular chamber 27.
