Abstract
A process for making a resinous composition, comprising polymerizing a solution of 85-98 weight percent of an organic liquid composed of at least one aromatic monoaliphenyl monomer polymerizable compound of the benzene series having the radical nivil or the insopropenyl radical as the only polymerizable group directly attached to an aromatic nucleus carbon atom, in which the polymerizable aromatic portion of said liquid consists of at least 75 percent by weight of a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon of the serious benzene or a nuclear halogenated derivative of the same, and 15 to 2 percent of an unsaturated rubber consisting of natural rubber, or rubber-like copolymers with 20 to 60 percent by weight of styrene and 80 to 40 percent of butadiene or rubber-like copolymers with 18 to 35 percent by weight of acrylonitrile and 82 to 65 percent of butadiene, or a homopolymer of butadiene similar to rubber, in the presence of 0.0005 to 0.75 weight percent based on the weight of the solution, of a polymerization modifying agent which is an unsaturated dimer of a styrene alpha-alkyl monomer having the general formula: ** (See formula) ** wherein X and Y represent hydrogen, halogens, or lower alkyl radicals containing no more than 3 carbon atoms.
