Abstract
In the production of terphenyls by the pyrolysis of a mixture of benzene and diphenyl, the formation of specific terphenyl isomer(s) is suppressed by adding the isomer(s) to the feed. Preferably the formation of para-terphenyl is suppressed to obtain a mixture or the orthoand meta-isomers having a low melting point. The para-terphenyl in the feed is preferably recycled para-terphenyl separated from the product by distillation or crystallization. Higher polyphenyls are also preferably recycled. Suitable feeds contain 70-80 parts by weight of benzene, 20-30 parts of diphenyl, 0,5-10 parts of selected terphenyl isomer and all higher polyphenyls formed in the process. Conversion is effected at 550 DEG -900 DEG C. at high turbulance, e.g. a Reynolds number of 10,000-500,000, in a single or multi-tube reactor.
