Abstract
Nitrogenous fibres are dyed or printed with an aqueous preparation which contains a metallisable dyestuff, an agent yielding chromium or cobalt and an assistant that is capable of forming with water, or water and an additive, a system of two liquid phases having a miscibility gap, the amount of assistant used being within the miscibility gap, the miscibility gap occurring at even relatively low concentrations of assistant and then subjecting the fibres to a moist heat treatment without intermediate drying. The metallisable dyestuffs must contain groupings capable of forming a complex compound with chromium or cobalt, for example o:o1-dihydroxyazo, o-hydroxy-o1-carboxyazo, o-hydroxy-o1-aminoazo groupings, vicinal hydroxyl groups in the anthraquinone nucleus, salicylic acid and hydroxyquinoline radicals. Dyestuffs usually requiring a two-bath after-chroming process can be used in the present single-bath process. Specified agents yielding chromium or cobalt are sodium, potassium and ammonium chromate, Cr and Co complexes with tartaric acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid and salicylic acid-sulphonic acid, cobalt ammine complexes of the formula [Co(NH3)6] Cl3, [Co(NH3)5 Cl] Cl2, [Co(NH3)5.H2O] Cl3, [Co(NH3)4.CO3] NO3. 1/2 H2O and the complex obtained when an excess of aqueous ammonia is added to cobaltous acetate solution and the excess ammonia is expelled on a water-bath in the air. The fibres exemplified are wool which may be in the greasy condition mixed fabrics of wool with cellulose acetate, polyester or cotton may be dyed by including an appropriate disperse or direct dyestuff in the aqueous preparation. Advantageously a thickener is used such as alginate, British gum, tragacanth or carob bean ether. The assistants employed in the examples are the condensation product of 1 mol coconut oil fatty acid and 2.25 mols diethanolamine with the elimination of 1 mol water, the product obtained by keeping the addition product of 9 mols ethylene oxide with 1 mol coconut oil fatty acid diethanol-amide and with 1.1 mols diethanolamine for 1 hour at 140-150 DEG C. and the addition product of 8 mols ethylene oxide with 1 mol of a specified p-octylphenol.
