Abstract
A process for producing pig iron in a rotary furnace essentially cylindrical and horizontal, comprising the steps of: establishing in said furnace a slag body of a temperature not higher than 1450º C, and preferably of about 1200º C to 1400º C; rotating the furnace about its axis of rotation, essentially horizontal, with a speed of at least 10 revolutions per minute, to communicate to said body a tumbling movement; supplying a crumbled iron oxide material, including iron ore, and a carbonaceous material comminuted to the upper part of said body, in such proportions that a pig iron containing at least 3% carbon is formed, and on top of said body a reducing layer of strongly reducing potential with respect to the iron oxides, said layer including carbon monoxide; supplying to the space above said body a combustion gas essentially more oxygen rich than air, so that oxygen does not penetrate through said reduction layer, and in sufficient quantity for the combustion of at least half of the carbon monoxide emanating from said body and reduction layer, that is, maintaining in said space a total CO2 to CO ratio greater than 1.
