Abstract

A cylindrical container body member (97) is initially provided, for example by axially welding a metal sheet wall, and the cylinder's top edge is formed into a roll-edge (90). The top edge is then folded outwardly to form a hollow annular lip, and this lip is further shaped and deformed to provide a multi-fold (931, 932, 933) reinforcing flanged rim (93) located externally of the body member but materially integral therewith and having a concave portion between folds (932 and 933). Additionally, there is formed on the reinforcing flanged rim (93) at least two (and preferably three) inwardly folded sections (935) for retaining a lid (125) on the container. The roll-edge (90) defining the bottom of one fold section (93) preferably lies against a recessed portion of the cylindrical wall. The flanged rim (93) can conveniently accept a closure lid, and also provide a shoulder to support a lid levering tool. The ends of a carrying handle (94) can be clamped in the folds of the rim. A circumferential protuberance on the container body may be provided and act as stop means for axial stacking. Strips of elastic material (125'') may be provided to improve sealing. The retention effect of the inwardly folded section (935) is increased by further inwardly folding the sections after the lid has been mounted on the container.
