The apparatus comprises a distributing roller (2) which draws the adhesive from a basin (4-26) and lays it on a surface of the sheet that is caused to pass tangentially to the distributing roller (2), a distribution doctor roll (8-25) which regulates the amount of adhesive on the surface of the distributing roller (2), a contrast roller (14) disposed tangentially to the distributing roller (2) and adapted to remove the adhesive in excess and to return the sheet material (15), a cleaning doctor blade (21) for the distributing roller (2) and adjusting means designed to move the distribution doctor roll (8-25), the contrast roller (14) and the cleaning doctor blade (21) close to or away from the distributing roller (2).
