Abstract

The invention relates to an epicyclic reduction gear unit, in particular for the electric starter of an internal combustion engine. The gear unit is provided with a planet-gear carrier plate (5), which is connected to a mating plate (11) which carries a drum (11a) with which two clamping shoes or balance weights (15) can interact, the said shoes or weights being carried by a flange (13) of the primary shaft (1) of the gear unit. A drive system (9) acting in only one direction locks the ring gear (6) with the aid of a tubular element (7) when the primary shaft (1) is driving the secondary shaft (5b) and unlocks it as soon as the secondary shaft becomes the driving shaft.
