Abstract

In apparatus for practizing golf a ball is propelled from a tee 10, Fig. 1, towards a target 19, the tee having a photo-cell responsive to the departure of the ball and the target being flexible and having 4 inertia switches 21 responsive to the shock of the ball reaching the target, there being means for measuring the time between the actuation of the photo-cell and the target switches. The tee 10, Fig. 2, consists of a flexible tube 36 having the photo-cell 35 at the bottom. Set slightly forward of the tee are transducers 43, 44. These respond to defective strokes of the club, the transducer 43 on the right detecting " slice " and that 44 on the left detecting " hook " when struck by the club the inertia switches 21 each consist of a housing 20, Fig. 5, and a contact 28 mounted on a spring 25. The time period is measured by discharging a capacitor from the time photocell 35 is exposed to the time one of the switches 21 operates. The faster the ball is travelling, therefore, the shorter the discharge time and the higher the remaining voltage on the capacitor. This voltage is transformed into an approximate indication of the distance the ball would have travelled if it had not been stopped by the target. For this purpose a rising stair-case voltage is generated by a stepping-switch potentiometer stepped by a relay flip-flop circuit. The charge on the capacitor is applied to the guide of a gas-tube and the staircase voltage is applied to the cathode. The gas-tube accordingly acts as a comparator, firing as soon as the change on the capacitor is exceeded by the stair-case voltage. The output from the gas-tube interrupts the stepping. Other banks of the stepping switch are connected to a display board of lamps indicating the distance the ball would have travelled. The " slice " and " hook " detectors 43, 44, if actuated, cause the indication to be transferred through other stepping switch banks to another display board together with " slice " or " hook " indication.
