Abstract
A blower 4, Fig. 1 for a nuclear reactor comprises a frame 8 attached by bolts 12 to a metal supporting ring 3 which is connected to the concrete wall 1 of the reactor around a cylindrical opening 2. A cylindrical cage for supporting the driving motor or turbine 5 and the shaft bearings 6, 7 from the frame 8 comprises four rings 10 interconnected by ten tierods 11 which may be welded to the rings. To facilitate assembly, each ring 10 is split into two parts 10a, 10b joined by bolts 13, Fig. 2. In three of the rings 10, the parts 10a are preferably hollow as shown, while the parts 10b are solid. After the frame 8, the motor or turbine 5 and bearings 6, 7 have been secured to the lower half of the cage, as by weld seams 5a or bolted flanges 7a, the upper half is attached by the bolts 13. After the assembly has been inserted into the opening 2, it may be temporarily supported, while the bolts 12 are being fitted, by two pairs of screw jacks, 14, Figs. 2 and 4, which may also be used for adjusting the position of the blower relative to the supporting ring 3. Some of the weight of the overhanging structure may be borne by the concrete wall 1 through pivoted links 15 which permit expansion of the cage relative to the wall. Instead of being solid rods, the tie-rods 11 may be metal tubes through which a fluid, for cooling, lubricating or other purposes, may be circulated, the connections to the tubes being made through flexible piping to permit free expansion.
