Antecedentes de la invención Background of the invention
The present invention relates to the field of rodent control and, more particularly, to a device and method for acclimating rodents to the presence of traps by deploying the traps in a deactivated state, wherein the traps are configured to operate in deactivated mode. monitoring and to self-activate at a later time without manual intervention by the user.
Descripción de la técnica relacionada Description of the related technique
Rodents, and rats in particular, are neophobic, meaning they are skeptical of new objects in their environment. It is well documented that rodents will avoid a new object for a period of time that can be hours, days, or even weeks, even if there is bait or food associated with the new object.
To address this neophobic trend, a technique used by pest control professionals and others knowledgeable about trapping rodents is to introduce rodent traps into a baited environment, but without setting them. After a set waiting period has passed for the rodents to acclimate to the traps, the pest control technician returns to the traps and sets them. This technique achieves at least two objectives. First, the baited but innocuous state of the traps allows rodents to interact with them during the waiting period without being caught. Second, as rodents successfully feed on traps without injury, they leave urine and odors/pheromones that calm other rodents, making them feel it is safe to approach the new object.
The drawback to the above technique is the time and labor required to bait and locate the traps without setting them, then leaving the traps for the waiting period and then resetting each of the traps at a later date.
Therefore, there is a need for a device by which introduced rodent traps can be set with or without bait, but not set, and then, after a waiting period, activated or set non-manually, so that The need for a technician to return to the traps a second time is eliminated.

As shown in Figure 1, an electronic rodent trap 100 comprised by the system of the present invention may include a high voltage output circuit 10 that is controlled by a central processing unit (CPU) 12 and in communication with a first plate 14 and a second plate 16. A third plate 18 may also be included as shown in Figures 2 and 3. All embodiments can be configured with two or three plates, or even with additional plates, and the inclusion of two plates compared to three plates among the embodiments shown herein in each of the drawings is intended to be representative without being limiting. Upon activation, circuit 10 supplies a high-voltage pulse train to plates 14, 16. Electronic rodent traps having high-voltage kill plates are described in U.S. Patent Nos. 6,735,899 ("the patent '899"), 6,836,999 ("the '999 patent") and 7,219,466 ("the '466 patent").
The trap 100 includes a communication chip 20 and an antenna 22 that allows the CPU 12, which controls the placement of the circuit 10 in a ready or activated state, to be in wireless communication with a remote user 48. The trap 100, without bait or preferably baited, can be placed in a new trap location in a state where the trap is not set, but is in standby or monitoring mode, i.e. deactivated. In monitoring mode, the trap does not automatically activate to supply a high voltage pulse to the plates 14, 16 in direct response to the presence of rodents in the trap, but can simply wait and then self-activate or activate remotely when it occurs. one or more specific inputs or trigger events as will be described later. The trap can also be configured to perform other functions when in monitoring mode, as will also be described herein. Once the trap is activated, the high voltage circuit 10 will be activated by contact of the rodents with at least two of the plates in a manner similar to the operation of the electronic rodent trap described in the '899, '999 and '999 patents. 466.
According to the first embodiment shown in Figure 1, the CPU 12 can configure or place the trap in an activated state in response to receiving a wireless signal from the user 48. The user can send the signal by using a smartphone application 30 or any of various types of computing devices such as a PC 32 via the Internet 34 or by using the cloud 36 for transmission to the antenna 22 and the communication chip 20, or by any other currently known or future wireless network transmission method. Accordingly, when the user 48 is represented in the drawings of Figures 1 to 4 without a specific device, it should be understood that the user can use any operating device and/or method configured to initiate or receive wireless communications.
In a second embodiment shown in Figure 2, the CPU 12 can place the trap in an activated state in response to a wireless signal sent by the user through the use of a dedicated remote controller 24 that is specifically designed to operate with the trap.
In a third embodiment shown in Figure 3, the trap 200 is operational with an internal timer 40 or a cloud-based timer 42. As set by user 48, the timer defines a time or waiting period during which the trap remains in monitoring mode. Upon expiration of the timeout or waiting period, the CPU 12 initiates placing the trap in a configured or activated state. User 48 may choose to override timer 40, 42 to set the trap earlier by sending a trigger signal 44 to trap 200 from cloud 36 or over the Internet as in Figure 1.
In a fourth embodiment, a trap 300 is provided that includes an activity detector 25. The activity detector 25 may be one or more sensors to detect activity proximal to the trap and/or interactions with the trap while the trap is in monitoring mode. These sensors may include, but are not limited to, a motion detector 50, which may be an accelerometer, a temperature detector 52 that responds to the body temperature of a rodent, an active or passive infrared detector 54, a proximity detector 56 and /or an impedance detector 58 configured to recognize rodent-consistent impedance values measured across the plates. Data from the sensors is continuously provided to the CPU 12 where it is analyzed to determine whether the reported data is consistent with rodent activity or is likely due to some other cause such as insect activity, environmental factors, and the like. While remaining in monitoring mode, the CPU 12 keeps track of the number and type of interactions through the use of an internal counter 60, a cloud-based counter 160, or the like.
When equipped with an activity detector 25 having one or more sensors, the user can configure the trap 300 to activate with the extermination setting upon detecting a threshold number of rodent interactions with the trap. User 48 may also choose to activate trap 300 independently by transmitting a communication signal through cloud 36 or by using any of the other pathways shown in Figure 1.
In addition to detecting and tracking activity and/or interactions with the trap as just described, the trap can also be configured to send wireless signals that provide the user with 48 activity alerts. Activity alerts allow the user to stay informed of interactions occurring in the trap while the trap is in monitoring mode. In response to these alerts, the user can choose to trigger or remotely trigger the trap before the threshold number of rodent interactions have occurred by transmitting a wireless signal to the CPU 12 via the communication chip 20.
Representatively summarized in the flow chart of Figure 5 is a method of acclimating rodents to traps by placing the traps in an area of operation without setting them up and subsequently, in response to a remote signal, expiring a period of time. , activity detected close to the trap and/or similar, the traps configure or activate themselves without manual intervention.
According to the method, the trap is placed in a new location in a deactivated state, step 400. The trap may be baited or unbaited when it is placed. If the trap has an internal timer, step 402, the timer is set, step 404. Thereafter, the trap operates in monitoring mode while keeping track of whether the timer has expired, step 406. If the timer has not has expired, step 406, the trap remains deactivated and available for interaction with rodents in monitoring mode, step 408.
If the trap has an activity sensor, step 410, the trap monitors upcoming activity and/or interactions with the trap, step 412. As long as no activity is detected, step 414, the trap continues to monitor activity, step 412. When activity is detected, step 414, the trap increments a counter or other similar mechanism, step 416, and determines whether a threshold number of activities or interactions has been detected, step 418. If the threshold number of activities or interactions has not yet been reached , step 418, and in the absence of a remote signal, step 419, the trap remains deactivated and available for interaction with rodents in the monitoring mode, step 408. Once the threshold number of activities or interactions has been reached, step 418, or if a remote signal from the user has been received, step 419, the trap activates itself without manual intervention, step 420.
If the trap does not have an activity sensor, step 410, and does not have a timer, step 402, or has a timer that has not yet expired, step 406, the trap remains deactivated and available for interaction with rodents in the mode of monitoring, step 408, until a remote signal is received, step 422, or until the timer has expired, step 424. Upon receiving a remote signal, step 422, whether from a remote control, a smartphone application or a PC via the Internet or the cloud, or upon expiration of the timer, step 424, the trap is self-activated without manual intervention, step 420. The activation event may be, for example, the expiration of a time period set by a autonomous timer in the trap. Additionally, or alternatively, the trap may include an activity sensor and the triggering event may be the detection of a threshold level of rodent activity in or adjacent to the trap by the activity sensor. The trap could also be equipped with other autonomous sensors operational without input from an external source to activate the trap at a time after initial deployment, or at the time of deployment.
