Abstract

In a ball joint, a flexible sealing sleeve 1, Fig. 1, has one open end forming a seal around the mouth of the ball housing 2 and the opposite open end formed with a shoulder 1b provided with a flexible, inner, annular lip 1c, Fig. 2, sealingly engaging the ball pin 3 and with a flexible, outer, annular lip 9 in sealing engagement with the adjoining face of a boss 4 or other part engaged by the pin, a rigid reinforcing washer 7 or 7a being secured, by bonding or otherwise, around the inside of the sleeve shoulder 1b with its opening overhung by the lip 1c. The washer engages a shoulder 8 on the ball pin to locate the lipped end of the sleeve 1 against axial movement in one direction, the outer lip 9 locking against movement in the opposite direction. Fig. 3 shows modified forms of inner lip and washer. The sleeve is retained in a groove in the ball housing outer surface by a circlip 6. The ball joint may be used in vehicle suspension or steering rod assemblies. Specifications 874,566 and 910,969 is referred to.
