Process for the desulfurization of vapors and gases containing organic sulfur compounds, characterized in that for the transformation of the organic sulfur compounds into hydrogen sulfide, the vapors or gases are conducted together with hydrogen or gas containing free hydrogen through catalysts of hydrogenation at temperatures between 280 and 400º C, and then the hydrogen sulphide formed is separated, foreseen passing the gas-vapor mixture subjected to the catalytic hydrogenation, at temperatures up to 400º C by an accumulation of a coarse-grained solid matter containing at least 5% by weight of manganese oxide (calculated as metal), to be released from its content of hydrogen sulphide, except for a desired residual sulfur content, and because the solid matter enriched in sulfur is regenerated, leaving it in the place of desulfurization, by passing air and recovering at the same time a gas containing SO2.
