Abstract
A plug in which the sheath surrounding the wires of a thermocouple is brazed comprises an inner part 1 having a frusto-conical end 3 force fitted into an axial recess 4 in an annular outer part 2, the parts having a bore 6 in which the sheath is brazed using brazing material introduced through transverse bores 7, 8 and the two parts having transverse apertures 5, 10 for the introduction of an anti-wetting substance to restrict the brazing area. The thermocouple sheath (not shown) is placed in the bore 6 of part 1 and an anti-wetting agent, e.g. suspension of alumina in alcohol or acetone is introduced into the bore 5 and into the aperture 10, the two parts are force fitted together, a slot 12 over the whole length of the part 1 providing resilience. Brazing material is introduced into mating orifices 7 and 8 in the parts 1 and 2 and brazing of the sheath is effected. The complete plug is then welded at 13 to a capsule 11. The part 2 may have cooling fins.
