Abstract
A method for the production of laminated sheet material, such as plywood, comprises applying separately and successively to one or both of the surfaces to be bonded first a liquid resinous component and secondly a comminuted, fusible solid resinous or potentially resinous component, bringing the surfaces to be bonded together, and curing the resinous material of the combined coating under heat and pressure, both the liquid and solid components being potentially thermosetting at least in the presence of one another. The term " liquid resinous component " covers a condensation product of an aldehyde with urea or thiourea, or with a phenol which is unsubstituted in those portions of the ring which are reactive towards formaldehyde, such phenols being phenol, metacresol, 3.5-xylenol and resorcinol. The term " solid resinous component " covers products which are resinous or become resinous when heated or upon reaction with one or more of the ingredients of the liquid resinous component and are thermosetting when heated alone or in conjunction with the liquid component, e.g. condensation products of aldehyde with urea, melamine or thiourea, phenol, meta-cresol, 3.5-xylenol and resorcinol which are solid at room temperature. Preferably, both liquid and solid components are condensation products of phenol with formaldehyde, the phenol being of the resole type produced by 1 mol. of phenol with 1 mol. of aldehyde under alkaline conditions, or of the novolak type. When phenolic novolak resin or tannin extracts, such as mimosa, quebracho and wattle bark powders, are used as the powdered component, an aldehyde donor, such as hexamine or paraformaldehyde may be incorporated. In operation, the sheet material, such as wood veneer, is conveyed past a station whereat a film of the liquid resinous component is deposited by brushing, rolling, spraying or by a curtain coater in which the liquid is fed through a slot of adjustable width. The sheets are then conveyed past a second station whereat the solid resinous component is deposited by brushing, spraying or by a second curtain coater having a vibrator. If the solid component is sprayed, the particles may be electrostatically charged. Thereafter the sheets are assembled to form a laminate with the grains in adjacent veneers at right-angles and the assembly lightly pressed for 30 minutes before being placed in a press at a temperature of 115 C. and a pressure of 200 lb. per square inch for 6 minutes. The Specification includes a number of examples giving the quantities of constituents used in the liquid and solid components.
