The method of communicating to the paper a substantially permanent watermark of selected geometric pattern comprising the steps of impregnating a part of said paper in the configuration of said drawing with a composition consisting of about 30% by weight to about 70% by weight of at least one organic compound selected from the group consisting of sucrose acetate butyrate, acetate, sucrose isobutyrate and an alkaline salt of a dialkyl sulfosuccinate dissolved in an inert organic solvent, said solvent having a boiling point in the range of about 100º C to about 250º C in an amount of about 70% by weight to about 30% by weight.
