Abstract

A flooring unit comprises a parquet layer 11 and a backing layer 10, said parquet layer comprising elementary elongate rectangular wooden blocks 12 secured by adhesive to the backing layer and at least two longitudinal sides of said unit having a marginal recess 14 cut into the bottom face of said backing layer and extending the whole length of said longitudinal sides, said backing layer consisting of a yielding heat and sound insulating material having a modulus of elasticity not exceeding 5000 kgs./cm.<2>, and the width -of said marginal recesses cut into the bottom face of said units substantially corresponding to one half of the length of said elementary wooden blocks of the parquet layer. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the backing layer 10a of the unit projects beyond the parquet layer along two sides while the parquet layer projects beyond the backing layer along the two other sides of the unit. In a further embodiment, only a portion of the thickness of the backing layer is removed to form the recess. The preferred material for the backing layer is bitumenized wood fibre board.
