Abstract

The cross-machine uniformity of paper is controlled by locally adjusting the consistency of the paper stock immediately prior to the formation of paper therefrom. Water is supplied through pipes 7 to the rear of a holey roll 6 having transverse baffles. The bottom of pipes 7, may be above or below the stock level of headbox 1. The valve 10 of each pipe 7 is manually or automatically controlled in dependence upon sample measurements of the basis weight and/or caliper across the width of a paper sheet produced or alternatively until a straight water line perpendicular to the machine direction is obtained. The front wall 3 is adjustable to vary the size of the slice opening as a whole, and has preferably a straight bottom edge. Alternatively the invention may be applied to a conventional headbox having means to obtain local adjustment of the slice opening, or may be applied to a cylinder machine.
